OTZEKI SWEET SUNSHINE

Emerging like a sea monster from the deep, London-based electro-punk duo Otzeki's new single 'Sweet Sunshine' is unsettlingly excellent. Ominous and addictive at the same time, like that mildly sadistic feeling when you see a traffic accident and can't look away, the track centres around a creepy as hell guitar riff drowned in Connan Mocksin-esque wonky vibrato. Wriggling free from a perfectly balanced bed of electronic elements, taunting sub-bass lurks beneath intricate, percussion heavy beats that leave you no choice but to sway along with them. Narrowly escaping a collision of his own, Mike Sharp explains: “It was the height of Summer in 2019 and I was cycling across Waterloo Bridge when an outrageously beautiful girl stepped into the road causing me to brake sharply, on her chest written in a bold red typeface was ‘BOYS CAN’T WRITE SONGS’. It was pretty silly but, whoever she was, she inspired me write about a femme fatale who exploited her sexual power to get whatever she wanted.” Check out the equally unnerving video here now.
